Spouse/partner support

Information for CERN Staff and Fellows

As an international organisation, CERN recruits internationally and is committed to providing support for all family members accompanying its employed members of the personnel as they integrate into the local region. To this end, the Organization offers spouses/partners several services to facilitate their transition to their new environment, both socially and professionally.

Spouse Welcome
The aim of the Spouse Welcome function for spouses is to facilitate integration by meeting other newcomers and to provide the opportunity to interact with some internal services of CERN and three external local networks. The topics discussed are: accommodation, childcare, education, CERN Health Insurance Scheme, finding work, language courses. Find more information on the integration of families and the next date in this brochure.

Obtaining a CERN access card
Spouses/partners can obtain a CERN access card from the Registration Service, allowing them to use the on-site facilities such as the cafeteria. The procedure for obtaining the card can be found here.

Obtaining a “permis Ci” work permit
If they reside in Switzerland, the family members of CERN's employed members of the personnel are able to obtain a Swiss work permit through CERN for the duration of the member of the personnel’s employment contract with CERN. The application procedure can be found here (See: 3. Application for a "permis Ci" certificate).

Language courses
Spouses/partners are entitled to participate in French and English classes held at CERN (subject to a charge). Details can be found in the CERN training catalogue.

Monthly workshops run by the University of Geneva Welcome Center
The Welcome Centre of the University of Geneva and Carriere2 have kindly agreed that the spouses/partners of CERN's employed members of the personnel can take part in their monthly workshops on professional transition to Switzerland (subject to a charge). The programme can be found here.

International Dual Career Network (IDCN)
Spouses/partners have access to the IDCN, a network in the Lake Geneva region aimed at helping the spouses/partners of employees who have recently relocated here to find work. Events are organised throughout the year, in different locations, allowing members an opportunity to find out about the local job market, get advice from Human Resources professionals, meet the recruitment officers of the corporate members and network with other spouses/partners in the region. For more information, see here. To sign your spouse/partner up, please contact hr-diversity@cern.ch.

Social Affairs Service
