Jocelyn Bell Burnell is a Visiting Professor at the University of Oxford. In a career spanning over four decades, she has made outstanding contributions to astronomy, the public understanding of science, in particular advancing the role of women in science, and to the promotion of physics.

On the 16th of November 2013, “Expanding Your Horizons” was held in Geneva, this event gave the opportunity to 11 to 14 year old girls to discover the numerous careers available in the areas of science and technology.

‘Diversity in Action’ is an interactive half-day workshop designed to creatively explore the meaning and importance of diversity at CERN, in support of the organization’s value of “appreciating differences, fostering equality and promoting collaboration”. Using participative multi-media methods this innovative workshop will provide participants with insights into diversity, help them to develop greater sensitivity to differences, explore ways to recognize and overcome biases and thereby strengthen our tradition of inclusiveness at CERN.

On 21 June 2013, 12 members of WiN IAEA, WiN France and WiN Switzerland paid a visit to CERN near Geneva, Switzerland. The visit was initiated by WiN IAEA and hosted by CERN’s Diversity Programme.

According to the recent world report on disability, 15% of the world’s population is disabled. Among that group could be numbered famous physicists such as Isaac Newton and Paul Dirac, neither of whom could be classed as “neuro-typical”, and Stephen Hawking. This presentation will provide some basic data about global disability, and the socially imposed barriers which disabled people face. It will also include some stories about high achieving people with disabilities. Finally, some practical suggestions will be offered on how to respect and include people with disabilities in the workplace.

With the advances in neuroscience, we might be tempted to believe that clichés about differences between the brains of men and women are a thing of the past. But the media and magazines continue to trot out the old clichés about men and women, leading us to believe that our skills and our personalities are hardwired into immutable mental structures.

Diversity is an acknowledged source of creativity and innovation that can improve performance and ultimately create a definite advantage for the Organization. However, if not managed well both at team and individual level, it can become a source of misunderstanding, interpersonal tensions and conflict. The speaker will share concrete strategies and approaches to capitalise on a diverse workforce and create the right environment where differences become an asset that leads to creativity, idea generation and, ultimately, innovation.
